Directions: For this assignment you will be reading two articles about atoms and subatomic particles and then answering several questions about the information in each article.  You need to write the answers to the questions IN YOUR OWN WORDS!  Do not just quote the article!  You should answer the questions on a separate document and then email your answers to me (echilds@ras.ma).

Article 1: Atoms Around Us

1. Explain how atoms are like an alphabet.  Make sure that you use specific examples of atoms and compounds as well as specific examples from the alphabet.
2. Explain the difference between an atom and a molecule.
3. Compare the relationship between atoms and molecules and molecules and macromolecules.

Article 2: Science for Kids – The Atom

1. Explain what determines what makes one element different from another element.
2. Identify the number of natural elements and calculate the number of human-made elements.
3. Identify how atoms “change and undergo chemical reactions”.
4. Create a table comparing the location in the atom, charge, and one interesting fact about protons, neutrons and electrons.
5. Define quark and neutrino.
