Conduction, Convection & Radiation Mind-Map

Directions: For this assignment you will be creating a mind-map explaining the concept of heat transfer including the processes of conduction, convection and radiation.  Read the short articles below and use your Conduction, Convection & Radiation Mini-Practicals to help you.  You will be demonstrating your understanding of the mini-practicals and readings through a mind-map explaining heat transfer, including the processes of conduction, convection and radiation.  Good luck, and make sure that you ask if you have any questions!

Short Articles

(Read these for important information – think about the questions below each article as you consider how to set up your mind-map!)

Conduction

  1. State an example of a good conductor and an example of a bad conductor.
  2. Explain how conduction works, including an explanation of particles and electrons.
  3. Describe the movement of heat in the series of diagrams on the site.  Be very clear about the role of electrons and ions in your description!

Convection

  1. Explain why liquids and gases are both considered fluids.
  2. Describe the process of the movement of heat through convection.
  3. Explain the role of density in the movement of heat through convection.

Radiation

  1. Describe how the movement of heat in radiation is different from the movement of heat in conduction and convection.
  2. Explain why we can feel heat energy from the sun even though it is 150 million km from Earth.
  3. Explain what sort of surface is a good absorber and emitter of infrared radiation and why.
