Antacids: Student-designed Investigation

Directions: For this practical you are going to be designing an investigation to test the effectiveness of an antacid of your choice or several different antacids of your choice.  You will be designing a research question, determining your independent and dependent variables, and conducting the experiment on your own.  You will also choose all of your own materials, and develop the method of testing your antacid on your own.

You will need to do plenty of background research for this practical, including exploring how antacids work, active ingredients in antacids and acid/base neutralization.  You will also need to think carefully about what you are testing and what you are measuring, particularly in terms of you IV and DV.

You will be provided the following:

  1. 0.01M HCl (approximating stomach acid)
  2. Any glassware needed
  3. Some antacids needed (you may need to get some of these on your own!)
  4. Universal Indicator Solution
  5. pH probe
  6. Any other lab equipment needed

Assessment

For your final product you will be creating a visual lab report: a class presentation showing your lab report and research.  You will be assessed according to the Grade 9 Lab Grading Criteria Rubric, as well as the Antacid Practical Communication Rubric.  The presentation will need to include some written text with all the elements of a lab report, as well as large graphs, tables and other images.  Make sure to use your Lab Report Writing Guidelines to include all of the necessary information to do your best on each of the criteria!
