Neutralization Challenge!

Directions: For this practical you will be neutralizing different concentrations of NaOH and HCl.  Your goal is to neutralize each combination of different concentrations using the least possible amount of each.  You will need to create a data table in your lab notebook to keep track of your different concentrations and the amount of mLs you use of each.  Your combinations of HCl and NaOH are:

  1. 2M HCl + 0.5M NaOH
  2. 1.5M HCl + 0.5M NaOH
  3. 1M HCl + 0.5M NaOH
  4. 2M HCl + 1M NaOH
  5. 1.5M HCl + 1M NaOH
  6. 0.5M HCl + 1M NaOH
  7. 2M HCl + 1.5M NaOH
  8. 1M HCl + 1.5M NaOH
  9. 0.5M HCl + 1.5M NaOH
  10. 1.5M HCl + 2M NaOH
  11. 1M HCl + 2M NaOH
  12. 0.5M HCl + 2M NaOH

Procedure

  1. Start off with 5 mL of your first concentration of NaOH and 5 mL of your first concentration of HCl.
  2. Add four drops of Universal Indicator (U.I.) solution.
  3. Slowly add whichever substance is necessary to get to a neutral color on the U.I. solution.  (Less substance used is better!)
  4. Record the amount of each substance that you use to get the solution to be neutral.
