Directions: For this tutorial you are going to be working individually reading several articles and answering a series of questions about invasive species.  You should answer the questions on a separate electronic document (Word or Google Doc) and then email or share your answers with me.  Make sure that you read the articles thoroughly and answer each set of questions after each article.  Good luck!

“The Dirty Dozen” – Washington Post

1. Explain why invasive species are so dangerous to ecosystems and other organisms.
2. Create a table listing all of the species mentioned in the article (12 total).  Include the following columns in your table: name of invasive species, where the species came from, how we think it was released into the environment, and why the species is so destructive.  Make sure to include sufficient detail in your descriptions!

“Stopping the Next Amphibian Apocalypse” – New York Times

1. The pathogenic fungus, Bs (Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans), is an invasive species from Asia.  Describe how they think this fungus spread to Europe.
2. Explain the effects of Bs on amphibian populations.
3. Describe the efforts that governments can attempt in order to prevent the spread of the fungus and protect wild salamander populations.
4. Evaluate whether or not you think that efforts to prevent the spread of invasive species will be effective.  Use evidence from the articles to support your arguments.
