Mitosis & Cancer Article

Go to the article below about mitosis and cancer.  It is from the IUPUI Department of Biology.  Read through the article, and then answer the questions that appear at the bottom underneath “Objectives”.  Some of this will be new information, other parts will be review (i.e.: DNA replication).

Article: Cell Reproduction: Mitosis and Cancer

Questions to Answer (these also appear on the website):

  1. Draw or describe the phases of the cell cycle: G-Phase, S-Phase, and M-Phase (and what happens in each)
  2. Describe a chromosome and contrast it with a sister chromatid
    1. How did it get to be a sister chromatid?
    2. Why do the sister chromatids stay joined together?
  3. Explain how DNA is “unzipped” and replicated.  What is the function of DNA helicase, DNA polymerase, and DNA repair enzymes?  What do Histone proteins do?
  4. Draw and describe each phase of mitosis.
  5. Describe how a normal cell can be transformed into a cancer cell.
