Species and Speciation

Directions: Read through the article below on species and speciation, making sure to take notes on the concepts discussed.  Once you have finished the articles, you should also review the Species and speciation chapter in your textbook.  Using all the readings, answer the questions that follow on a separate sheet (either hand-written or Word Doc).  Make sure that you write the answers in your own words so that they make sense to you!

  1. Define species.
  2. Define speciation.
  3. Compare microevolution and macroevolution.
  4. Explain the biological species concept and outline three limitations of that concept.
  5. Define reproductive isolation.
  6. Identify four prezygotic isolation mechanisms and explain why those three mechanisms prevent hybridization between species.
  7. Identify three postzygotic isolation mechanisms and explain why those mechanisms prevent hybridization between species.
  8. Distinguish between allopatric and sympatric speciation; include a full definition of both types of speciation.
  9. Define polyploidy and explain how that condition can lead to sympatric speciation.
  10. Define phylogenetic tree.  Make sure to explain what it is and how it is constructed.
