Genetically Modified Organisms

Directions: Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are a major source of controversy. Some claim that GMOs are safe and improve food quality and security, others claim that they are potentially dangerous, untested, and unnatural.  There are also multiple stakeholders (interested parties) in this issue.  In small groups, you are going to represent one of the several stakeholders in a class debate.  You will need to research the position of your stakeholder and then present your position (for or against GMO crops) to the class.  You will need to be prepared to present evidence supporting your position, and you will also need to be ready to question the other stakeholders in the class.

Debate
You will need to include the following for the debate:

  1. Opening statement: Explain your position for or against GMO crops and a brief statement of why you support this position
  2. Evidence: At least three pieces of evidence supporting your position
  3. Questions for the other groups (counterargument): Questions that you are ready to pose to the other groups regarding their positions
  4. Rebuttal: Responses to other groups’ questions
  5. Closing statement: Final restatement of your position

Stakeholders
The following groups are all stakeholders in the controversy surrounding GMOs.

  1. Environmental Organizations (Greenpeace)
