Cell Biology Tutorial

Directions: For this class you are going to look at some models of cells and learn more about the different parts of cells.  You must write all of the answers to the questions below individually, either by hand or in a Word Doc.  You also must PARAPHRASE your answers.  Do NOT cut and paste or quote the articles.  Follow the directions and answer the questions in order.  Make sure that you consult the necessary websites when indicated.  This is a FORMATIVE assignment and will be assessed according to MYP Science Criterion C: Knowledge and Understanding of Science (max: 6).  Good Luck!

Definitions: Read the definitions below before you watch the animations.

  1. Cell: the basic building block of life; they may exist as independent life forms (single celled organisms), or they can join together to form colonies or tissues, and then form multi-celled organisms
  2. Organelle: a specialized part of a cell; different organelles do different things

Look at the cell models and animations below and then answer the questions that follow:

  1. http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/3dcell.htm
  2. http://www.cellsalive.com/howbig.htm

Questions:

  1. What are some major differences between plant and animal cells?
  2. How are plant and animal cells different from bacteria cells?  (This is not in the animations – you need to remember this from class!)
  3. List at least 4 similarities between plant and animal cells.
  4. Why do differences exist between the two cells?  (Think about the functions of the different organelles and what you know about plants and animals!)
  5. How big is a cell?  List the items that you saw in the “How Big” animation in order from largest to smallest.
